Smashing Mirrors Theatre Company specialises in creating theatre for those living with dementia. When Artistic Director Elizabeth Godber contacted the festival about bringing their latest show to Ripon, we knew immediately that our friends at Dementia Forward would be keen to help make this happen.
Mike and Millie Go to the Seaside is a charming 20-minute show which takes the audience on a day trip to the 1960s. Using music, dance, mime and rhyme, the actors stimulate the audience’s memories and provoke interactions. The show was trialled at the Stephen Joseph Theatre in Scarborough and at Derby Theatre. The piece will be presented at Dementia Forward’s Burton Leonard hub, George Armitage House, at 11am on Friday 9 June and repeated at 3pm at Holy Trinity Church in Ripon.
Mike and Mille Go to the Seaside was developed with help from Butterflies Memory Loss Support Group, Hull University’s MSC in Dementia Studies students and those working in Dementia Care at Hull Royal Infirmary. Artistic Director, Elizabeth Godber says: “Theatre and music, can hugely improve wellbeing for those living with dementia, but often, for those living with later stages, and their carers, it is inaccessible. We believe theatregoing is an incredible experience that should be enjoyed by all.”
Dementia Forward is local charity supporting people living with dementia and their families across York and North Yorkshire. Staff from the charity will be on hand at both events to support audience members, provide advice and help everyone get to know each other. There’s sand, seaweed and shells to touch. And of course, a cup of tea at the end!
